The sunglasses

Lunettes de soleil

The Inuit (Arctic residents) used ivory masks with a small horizontal slit to protect their eyes. Nero liked to watch gladiator fights through an emerald. But it was in 1929 that the American James Foster produced the sunglasses as (or almost) we know it.

He will be selling the first sunglasses in the world at his store located near the beaches of Atlantic City (New Jersey, U.S.A.). It will not even take a year for this little object to become a staple of fashion.

A few years later, the US military will realize the benefit of these tinted glasses. Navy aircraft pilots are often exposed to strong light. A few years later, the laboratory Bausch & Lomb, to which the army appealed, made the first prototypes, tinged with a particular green, limiting dazzling.
